I got my 772s today and of course had to open one and taste itAnd it's not a bad whisky, I must say.
At first fresh, clean, salty, some sea breeze and faint citrus on the nose. I like this! Somehow a bit like in the 2739. When compared head to head 772 is more sweet and has clear cream toffee notes, as the 2739 is more smoky, in the old medicinal Ardbeg way.
Back on the 772, taste is much more smoky and peaty than the nose was. Some more salt, no citrus notes anymore and something like dry smoke, that reminds me of Renaissance. When compared head to head there isn't much in common, just that dry smoke, that is in the end of the taste or in the finish in Renaissance as well. Finish it rather long and leaves a nice smoky taste lingering on your tongue. Some citrus again here as well.
So, at least to me, a rather nice whisky I must say. Worth £192? Well, who knows, at least I'm happythough I was happy with the £130 13yo Bowmore Maltmen's as well...
At first I had 772 with the 86 F&M. Not much in common with them, as you probably guessedSomehow the 86 seems younger, more raw and quite dry. Btw, does anyone know how a cask of Ardbeg from 30.8.1990 can be cask number 86? What have they been using until mid august? Some 12000 liter wine barrels?
In the end I poured myself a glass of 1977 L4 to accompany the 2739 that was still left in the glass and I must admit, that the 70's Ardbegs win this round quite clearly, even though 772 still has a really lovely nose...
PS. The 2739 has been in the glass for an hour and a half or so, and after having nosed the virtually empty 772 glass, the 2739 now has a clear coconut smell to it
