THE world-famous whisky industry on the Hebridean island of Islay received a boost yesterday after plans were announced to expand its largest distillery.
Those eager to learn more about whisky and enhance their tasting experience of single malt, are welcome to enroll in Balvenie Whisky Academy. The scotch whisky brand is proud to present an online course consisting of 35 movies on the tasting secrets and the science behind whisky production.

It’s enjoyed all over the world and is worth billions of pounds to the British economy. But Scotch whisky is also undergoing a boom as an investment.

BenRiach and GlenDronach are two of seven independent Scottish distilleries collaborating to produce a unique whisky and donate all proceeds to the disaster relief effort in Japan.
Each of the seven distilleries, representing the best craft producers in the Scotch whisky business, is donating a cask of its single malt that will be expertly blended to create a limited edition whisky, appropriately called The Spirit of Unity.
The seven are Arran, BenRiach, Bladnoch, GlenDronach, GlenGyle, Kilchoman and Springbank. For whisky fans, they represent acclaimed malt whisky regions - in Islands, Speyside, Highland, Islay, Campbeltown and Lowland.

The Coleburn Distillery at Longmorn, five miles south of Elgin, fell silent when it was closed by owners J&G Stewart Ltd, then Diageo plc, in 1985.

The spirit, which was discovered eight months ago by a Scottish historian, has been launched with a price tag of £870,000 - making it the most expensive spirit in history.
The 105 year old whisky was distilled on the 17th February 1906 at the Aisla T'Orten distillery in the Highlands.
A devastating fire destroyed the buildings after just one day of operation, though a single ceremonial cask survived intact.
